Subject Directories:
  • are created and maintained by the directory's staff, typically librarians or research experts
  • allow users to browse Internet resources by different subject categories
  • enable you to search by keywords within the contents of the directories

  • Librarians' Index to the Internet:  Searchable subject guide that allows you to ask a librarian research questions, find resources by subject, access newspapers & magazines, browse special collections, and access specific resources for teens.
  • Digital Librarian-Directory of online resources, organized by topic, and maintained by a librarian.  
  • Sweet Search-A search engine for students that searches only the 35,000 web sites that thestaff of research experts, librarians, and teachers have evaluated and approved.
  • Infomine-Annotated links to over 22,000 librarian-selected scholarly and educational Internet resources.
  • RefDesk-a free and family-friendly web site that indexes and reviews quality, credible, and current web-based resources.

  • PBS-find videos and information by topic and then subtopic.  Topics include arts & entertainment, culture & society, health, history, how-to, news & public affairs, science & nature, technology, and food.
  • NASA-watch messages from space station crews, listen to NASA podcasts, use the A-Z index to find topics of information, and more.
  • Library of Congress-Find historic newspapers, sound recordings such as old interviews, prints and photographs, veterans history, maps, manuscripts, and more.
  • Wisconsin Historical Society-find original letters, real interviews, historic maps and newspaper articles, biographical sketches/articles, and more.
  • Smithsonian Education-Explore by topics such as everything art, science & nature, history & culture, and people & places.
